Raising Money For Lyme Disease Research

The Mount Equinox Uphill Bike Race is a benefit event raising funds for Lyme disease research.

Lyme disease is an infection by spirochete shaped bacteria that are difficult to detect and difficult to eradicate.

If diagnosed early and treated appropriately, treatment with antibiotics can be successful. Inappropriate treatment or delayed diagnosis can result in chronic Lyme disease which can produce multi-systemic problems including long-term debilitating arthritis, heart problems, abnormalities of the nervous system, and psychiatric manifestations.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) announced that there are more than 300,000 new Lyme cases in the annually. The range of the ticks transmitting Lyme disease has spread, and they are now found in 50% of the counties in the US. Lyme disease is found in over 80 countries worldwide. Sixteen other tick-borne diseases are now infecting humans in the US, and a person can become infected with more than one tick-borne disease with one tick bite.

Funding is desperately needed to further the development of more effective diagnosis, treatment and, ultimately, a cure for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. For information, please visit  the Lyme Disease Association.
